History

The city founded in 1883 was at one time the largest city in Florida larger than Miami due to the phosphate mining industry located in Citrus County. James Henry L. Barrs was one individual who founded Floral City. James Henry L. Barrs became a land owner and citrus grove farmer. At the beginning of World War One (WW1) the mining industry shut down in Floral City. Later after the war, mining was moved south to the Bartow, Florida area east of Tampa, FL after the war WW1 was over. Bartow is a city located in the US State of Florida in Central Florida east of the Tampa Bay area

Bordered on the east by the Withlacoochee River and in the middle of the Withlacoochee State Forest. The Withlacoochee State Forest is in the US state of Florida. Floral City is 7 miles south of Inverness, FL on US 41 and CR 48(formerly SR 48) and 13 miles north of Brooksville, FL. Inverness is a city in Citrus County, Florida, United States. US Route 41 is a north-south United States Highway that runs from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Miami Florida. State Road 48 is a short east-west state highway in Bushnell Florida. Brooksville is an incorporated city of Hernando County, Florida, in the United States.

This city is a true slice of Old Florida still remaining intact. The town was named Floral City for its abundance of wild flowers which continue to this day. Floral City also marks the beginning of the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes which run north into the Gulf of Mexico for the next 50 miles along the Withlacoochee River. The Withlacoochee River (South originates in central Florida 's Green Swamp east of Polk City. ^[4]

There were 2,180 households out of which 20. 4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56. 7% were married couples living together, 7.
