It lies between the villages of Thornhill to the north and Kippen to the south. Thornhill is a village in the Scottish Council area of Stirling. Kippen is a small village approximately 10 miles west of the city of Stirling, Scotland.

Formerly passable with difficulty, using boardwalks, during the 18th century much drainage of the land was encouraged by the lawyer, historian and improver Henry Home, Lord Kames but a substantial portion survived this development. Henry Home Lord Kames (1696 December 27, 1782) was a Scottish Philosopher of the 18th century

Flanders Moss is the largest raised bog in the UK to remain in a predominantly near-natural state and is designated as a National Nature Reserve.
