The series contains hints about the Firstborn, who, in the early days of the universe, developed as the first intelligent beings. They started an endless mission to regulate the development of sentient life in the universe, in order to prevent other species from harnessing too much of its energy. They believe that this will at the very least delay the inevitable Big Rip of the universe, just enough for them to make up a plan to escape. The Big Rip is a cosmological Hypothesis first published in 2003 about the Ultimate fate of the universe, in which the matter of the universe In their quest they also stumble on humanity, seeing it as just another threat to their project.
At the end of the novel mankind, alone or with other sentient allies (apart from AI), calls itself the Lastborn as they are at war with the Firstborn. They are losing.
