O'Malley comes from a famous political family. Her father, Desmond O'Malley, was a former Fianna Fáil Cabinet Minister and founder of the Progressive Democrats. O'Malley's first political position was as elected member of the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council from 1997. O'Malley was a member of the Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Sports and Tourism and the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children. Ciarán Cannon (born 19 September 1965 is an Irish politician and leader of the Progressive Democrats. Senator O'Malley currently serves as the Party Spokesperson on Energy, Arts and Culture.
