Etymology
The name is first recorded as Vinisbir (1231) and means "manor of a man called Finn. "[1]
The name as a geographical term of reference has partly been superseded in recent years by Clerkenwell and St Luke's. Clerkenwell is an area of central London in the London Borough of Islington. St Luke's is an area in the London Borough of Islington in Greater London, close to the borders with the London Borough of Hackney and the City of Although "Finsbury" is used in building names such as Finsbury Tower, the Finsbury Estate and the Finsbury Library and by local newspaper, the Clerkenwell & Finsbury Advertiser. History
The name Finsbury has also been applied to the Finsbury division of the Ossulstone hundred of Middlesex and later the Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury in the County of London. The Finsbury Division was one of four divisions of the Hundred of Ossulstone, in the County of Middlesex, England. Ossulstone was an ancient hundred in the south east of the county of Middlesex, England. The Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury was a Metropolitan borough within the County of London from 1900 to 1965 when it was amalgamated with the Metropolitan Borough In relation to this, there is a Finsbury Park some miles further north of the borough and within the division. Finsbury Park is a 112 acre (45-hectare public park in the London Borough of Haringey.
Now-demolished Holford Square was from 1942 the controversial location of a statue of Vladimir Lenin, erected by Finsbury Borough Council. The Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury was a Metropolitan borough within the County of London from 1900 to 1965 when it was amalgamated with the Metropolitan Borough
