As an amateur, Den Hertog was a menace to other cyclists as he won races in a prolific manner. He won two editions of the British Milk Race, in 1969 and 1971. History Origins The Tour of Britain known for many years as the Milk Race has its origins in a dispute between cyclists during the Second world war. His most outstanding performance remains the Rheinland-Pfalz tour in Germany in 1974, when he won all eight stages, leaving the competition utterly devastated.
As a pro, he managed one Tour de France stage win in 1977, but soon retired as he could not settle in the professional ranks. The 1977 Tour de France was the 64th Tour de France, taking place June 30 to July 24 1977
