The Queensland Government Planning Department's Population Growth - The Far North Queensland Region 2005 document defines the region an area comprising of ten local government areas: (Atherton, Cairns, Cardwell, Douglas, Eacham, Herberton, Johnstone, and Mareeba) and two Aboriginal Councils (Wujal Wujal and Yarrabah). Atherton Cardwell is a town and Local Government Area in the northeastern part of the state of Queensland on the east coast of Australia. Port Douglas is a town in Far North Queensland, Australia, approximately north of Cairns. The Local Government Areas (LGAs of Queensland, Australia are the areas for which particular Local Government authorities generally known as "Councils" Herberton is a town on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, Australia, located at, 882 m above Sea level. The main population and administrative centre of the region is located in Cairns. Other key population centres include Cooktown, the Atherton Tableland, Weipa and the Torres Strait Islands. Cooktown ( Guugu Yimithirr: Gangaarr) is the northernmost town on the east coast of Australia, located at the mouth of the Endeavour River, The Atherton Tableland is a fertile plateau which is part of the Great Dividing Range in Queensland, Australia. Weipa is the largest town on the Gulf of Carpentaria coast of the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. The Torres Strait Islands are a group of at least 274 small Islands which lie in Torres Strait, the waterway separating far northern continental Australia's Cape The region also consists of many Aboriginal and farming communities. Indigenous Australians are descendants of the first known human inhabitants of the Australian continent and its nearby islands.

Significant industries include tourism, cattle grazing, agriculture (sugar cane and tropical fruits) and mining of both sand and bauxite. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates the region's population at 30 June 2003 to have been 231,494 of which 117,531 lived in Cairns.
