Like many clubs in the Soviet Union they went through a number of name changes in their history. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR was a constitutionally Socialist state that existed in Eurasia from 1922 to 1991 They were known Dinamo Almaty when founded in 1952, before changing in 1954 to Lokomotiv Almaty, and later Urozhai Almaty, before settling on Kairat. They were the leading Kazakh team during the Soviet era, the only ever club to compete at the Soviet Top League, and to win the Soviet First League (second tier of competition) in both 1976 and 1983. The Soviet Top League (Высшая лига was the top division of Soviet Union football. The team achieved an all time high Soviet Super League finish of 7th in 1986 and altogether spent 24 seasons in the Soviet top division, a record for a Central Asian team. During the existence of the USSR Kairat Almaty was a part of the Voluntary Sports Society Kairat.
FC Kairat Almaty was the first Soviet Team to win European Cup ever! It happened in 1971 in Almaty, where Fc Kairat beat FC Rapid Bucharest with 2-1 and won European Railworks Cup.
The club also has a highly successful Futsal team AFC Kairat, who has been Kazakh champions in 2003-2007 seasons and reached semi-finals of UEFA Futsal Cup in 2005-06 and 2007-08 seasons. Futsal is an indoor version of Association football. Its name is derived from the Portuguese fut ebol de sal ão and the Spanish AFC Kairat is a Futsal club based in Almaty, the biggest city of Kazakhstan. In the end of 2006 season, the main sponsor of the club - Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (National railways company) withdrew. Kazakhstan Temir Zholy ( KTZ; Қазақстан Темир Жолы (ҚТЖ also National Company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, is the national Railway company This precipitated a financial crisis which lasted until the very start of 2007 season. Consequently, most players switched to other teams. The club entered the 2007 season with an inexperienced young team. In July 2007 a group of private investors took over the club and invested around 4m USD. The club progressed to the quarter final of the National Cup of Kazakhstan that season.
