The municipality was created as Faaberg formannskapsdistrikt January 1, 1838. Formannskaps-distrikt was the name for a Norwegian local self-government districts put into force in 1838. On January 1, 1964 Fåberg was incorporated into the neighboring municipality Lillehammer.
