All veterinarians are required to attend an accredited veterinary school, and in the United States, most obtain the professional degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). Following graduation, it is possible to obtain further education and training by pursuing board certification in one of the 20 veterinary specialties recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA founded in 1863 is a not-for-profit association representing more than 76000 U ^[1].
