History
The Essex 73’s have a proud history in their 35th season in the Great Lakes Junior C League. In the mid-1970s and early 1980s, the 73’s dominated the Great Lakes Junior C League winning 6 of the 8 League Championships from the 1974-75 season to the 1982-83 Season. With Dave Prpich behind the bench the 73’s won 4 in a row from 1974-75 to 1978-79, 3 Ontario Championships in that span. The 73’s would claim 2 more League Championships in the 80’s in 1985-86 and 1986-87. After some struggles in the early to mid 90’s the 73’s got back on top winning the league in 1997-98. In the 2001-02 season the 73’s brought aboard Head Coach Tony Piroski, in his first season the 73’s won the league and the Ontario Title. In the last 7 seasons under Piroski the 73’s have won 6 League Championships along with 2 Ontario Titles, the last one coming in the 2004-05 season in a 7 game series with the Grimsby Peach Kings. The Grimsby Peach Kings are a Junior "C" team based out of Grimsby Ontario. In the 1970’s the 73’s main rival was the Leamington Flyers, over the years it has changed, now the main rivals are the Belle River Canadiens and the Wheatley-Southpoint Sharks, teams the 73’s have knocked out over the past 6 seasons. The Leamington Flyers are a Canadian junior Ice hockey team based in Leamington, Ontario, Canada. The Belle River Canadiens are a Junior "C" team based out of Belle River Ontario. The Wheatley-Southpoint Sharks are a Junior "C" team based out of Wheatley Ontario. In total, the club has won 15 League Championships and 5 Ontario Titles, In total in the past 7 seasons, the 73's have won 6 League Championships including 4 in a row, 2 Ontario Titles and the past 2 seasons making it to the Ontario Finals before falling to the Penetang Kings. The Penetang Kings are a Canadian junior Ice hockey team based in Penetanguishene Ontario, Canada. The 2007-2008 brought home another League Championship for the 73's and are currently playing the Alliston Hornets in the Ontario Finals.
