It eventually leaves the vicinity of the mountain, and flows several miles until it reaches the Ashokan Reservoir. The Ashokan Reservoir is a reservoir in Ulster County, New York, USA. It then runs down the spillway on the dam that holds the reservoir back at Olivebridge, and flows southeast until it takes a sharp turn and heads northeast. Olivebridge, New York is a community in Ulster County, New York, U From there, the creek continues eastward until it flows north into the Hudson in Saugerties. Saugerties is a Town in Ulster County, New York, USA. The population was 19868 at the 2000 census

The creek is a component of New York City's water supply system. The City of New York Water from the Schoharie Reservoir flows through the Shandaken Tunnel, and empties out into the Esopus at Allaben, New York. The Schoharie Reservoir is a small Reservoir in the Catskill Mountains of New York State that was created to be one of 19 reservoirs that supplies The Shandaken Tunnel is an underground tunnel in Eastern New York State, part of the New York City water supply system. This water then flows 11 miles down the Esopus, and empties into the Ashokan Reservoir. This section is class 2–3 whitewater,[1] and is the site of a whitewater slalom in the Fall. The water in the reservoir that doesn't run down the spillway at the Olivebridge Dam enters the Catskill Aqueduct and enters New York City's water supply distribution system. The Catskill Aqueduct, part of the New York City water supply system, brings water from the Catskill Mountains to Yonkers where it connects to other parts of the sytem
