The Eritrean Free Zones Authority is the agency charged with the development and oversight of the Free Zones in Eritrea. Eritrea () ( Ge'ez: ኤርትራ ʾErtrā, Arabic: إرتريا Iritriya) officially the State of Eritrea, is a country in It offers two economic zones in Massawa and Assab, both coastal cities. Massawa, formerly known as Mitsiwa ( Ge'ez ምጽዋ miṣṣiwa, Arabic مصوع maṣṣawaʿ Assab (or Aseb, anciently Avalites) is a port city in the Southern Red Sea Region of Eritrea on the west coast of the Red Sea. The Authority is currently under the supervision of Araya Tsegay, the CEO. The Free Zones nominally opened in September of 2006 although, it was announced in 2001.
The Massawa Free Zone offers the Massawa International Airport, as well as seaport access. Massawa International Airport, is an Airport in Massawa, a major city in the Northern Red Sea Region of Eritrea. Furthermore it includes a container terminal and processing facilities. [1] The port will also have access to the rail link with mining operations set to become operational in 2008 in central Eritrea. [2]
The Assab Free Zone offers the Assab International Airport, as well as seaport access as well. Assab International Airport, is an Airport in Assab, the capital of the Southern Red Sea Region of Eritrea. Also, is a salt processing facility and oil refinery. [1]
Further expansions of the Free Zones Authority are planned, as they become viable.
