The plant family Ericaceae (also called the heath family or ericaceous plants) are mostly lime-hating or calcifuge plants that thrive in acid soils. Plants are living Organisms belonging to the kingdom Plantae. In Biological classification, family ( Latin Calcium oxide ( CaO) commonly known as burnt lime, lime or quicklime, is a widely used Chemical compound. A calcifuge is a Plant that does not tolerate Alkaline (basic soil In Computer science, ACID ( Atomicity Consistency Isolation Durability) is a set of properties that guarantee that Database transactions are Soil, often typeset as SOiL, is a four piece rock band from Chicago Illinois United States founded by Shaun Glass Tom Schofield Tim King and Adam Zadel Many well-known plants of the Ericaceae live in temperate climates, such as cranberry, blueberry, heath, heather, huckleberry, azalea and rhododendron. Cranberries are a group of Evergreen dwarf Shrubs or trailing vines in the genus Vaccinium subgenus Oxycoccos Blueberries are Flowering plants in the genus Vaccinium, sect Erica is a Genus of over 700 species of Flowering plants in the family Ericaceae; two English common names both shared with some other closely Calluna vulgaris (also known as Ling is the sole species in the Genus Calluna in the family Ericaceae. Azaleas are flowering Shrubs making up part of the genus Rhododendron. Rhododendron (from the Greek: rhodos, "rose" and dendron, "tree" is a genus of flowering plants in the family However, the family also contains many tropical species. [1]
The Ericaceae family consists of herbs, shrubs and trees with leaves that are alternate, simple and estipulate. Plants in this family are synoecious. Flowers in the family show considerable variability. The corollas are often sympetalous with shapes ranging from narrowly tubular to funnelform or widely bowl-shaped. The corollas are often actinomorhpic but flowers in the genus Rhododendron have flowers that are often zygomorphic.
Recent genetic research by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group has resulted in the inclusion of the formerly recognised families Empetraceae, Epacridaceae, Monotropaceae, Prionotaceae and Pyrolaceae into Ericaceae. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, or APG, refers to two international groups of systematic botanists who came together to try to establish a consensus view of the Monotropaceae was a small family of Flowering plants under the old Cronquist system of plant classification Pyrolaceae was a small family of Flowering plants under the old Cronquist system of plant classification Most Ericaceae, except Monotropaceae, Prionotaceae and Pyrolaceae form ericoid mycorrhiza. Ericoid mycorrhiza are a Symbiotic relationship between Fungi and the Roots of Plants from the order Ericales. This symbiotic relationship is considered crucial to the success of members of the family in edaphically stressful environments worldwide (Cairney and Meharg, 2003). In ecology edaphic refers to plant communities that are distinguished by Soil conditions rather than by the climate
