Ergon is a corporation owned by the Government of Queensland. A government-owned corporation, state-owned enterprise or government business enterprise is a legal entity created by a Government to undertake commercial The Government of Queensland is commonly known as the Queensland Government. It supplies electricity to Queenslanders outside the metropolitan southeast through a distribution network and retail activities.
In 2006 the Queensland Government announced plans to privatise part of the business, with the sale of approximately 50 000 contestable electricity customers and retailer trading activities to AGL taking place in 2007. Smaller electricity customers which are not economic continue to be billed by Ergon Energy and the electricity distribution network remains in public ownership.
