She is the daughter of Jennifer Elbert and pianist Roland Elbert, and spent her childhood in Dallas and the Dallas suburb of Coppell, Texas. The music played in her family quickly instilled in her a fascination with the musical world. Emily spent her childhood listening to music such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, James Taylor, and oldies radio, which she says had a significant impact on her musical development. A third-generation professional musician, Elbert began studying piano at an early age. But it wasn't until she was 15 that she picked up a guitar and began to sing. Her love for the instruments led her to the Berklee College of Music 5-Week Performance Program, vocal jazz workshops at the University of North Texas, and choirs at Coppell High School.
