Embudo is an unincorporated community in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States, situated along NM Highway 68 2. New Mexico ( is a state located in the southwestern region of the United States of America. The United States of America —commonly referred to as the State Road 68 is a long State highway in northern New Mexico. 9 miles south of the intersection of NM Highway 75 , where the Embudo River flows into the Rio Grande.
The town originally called Embudo (San Antonio de Embudo) was located 2 miles up the Embudo River and is now called Dixon. Dixon is an unincorporated village located in Rio Arriba County in the U Embudo was founded in 1881 when the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad opened a depot at the new location, and for a while both communities bore the same name. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, generally referred to as the Rio Grande, became the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1920 and is today a Fallen [1] At first the post office for both towns was in Embudo (1881-1902), but in 1900 San Antonio de Embudo was to get a post office, so they changed its name to Dixon. Embudo lost its post office when the Dixon post office opened in 1902. In 1905 Embudo again got a post office only to lose it 1909. However, since 1914 Embudo has had its own post office. [1]
There is a wooden bridge across the Rio Grande that leads to The "Embudo Historic District" which consists of the old railway depot and associated buildings. There is a gauging station at Embudo to measure the flow of the Rio Grande. It was the first United States Geological Survey stream-gauging station and was established by John Wesley Powell in 1888. The United States Geological Survey ( USGS) is a scientific agency of the United States government. John Wesley Powell ( March 24, 1834 - September 23, 1902) was a U Embudo was also the first United States Geological Survey training center for hydrographers. [2]
