The village of Elsecar lies between the neighboring towns of Barnsley and Rotherham. William and David Goodinson and a group of the other men of Elsecar decided to form the Elsecar Cricket Club. Elsecar ( IPA /ɛlsɪ'kɑː/ is a Village forming part of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. In 1895 the club joined the Hallamshire League 'A' Division which they played in until 1921 when they joined the Mexborough League. In 1929 they joined the Yorkshire Council (South Yorkshire Section) until the South Riding League was formed in 1948. This league was then re-branded the South Yorkshire Cricket League in 2002. In 2008 the 1st team is marshalled by the ex Somerset and Yorkshire allrounder Ian Swallow who has recently signed from Huddersfield League team Meltham.
