T. Gwyn Elger |
Elger is a lunar crater that lies along the southern edge of Palus Epidemiarum, the "Marsh of Epidemics", in the southwest part of the Moon's near side. Selenographic coordinates are used to refer to locations on the surface of Earth 's Moon. Thomas Gwyn Empy Elger ( October 27, 1836 &ndash January 9, 1897) was an English lunar mapper and the first director of In the broadest sense the term impact crater can be applied to any depression natural or manmade resulting from the high velocity impact of a projectile with larger body Palus Epidemiarum ( Latin for Marsh of Epidemics) is a small Lunar mare in the southwestern part of the Moon 's near side To the northeast is the flooded Capuanus crater, and further to the northwest is Ramsden crater. Capuanus is a lunar crater that lies along the southern edge of the Palus Epidemiarum. Ramsden is a lunar Impact crater located on the western stretch of the Palus Epidemiarum.
The rim of this formation is rough and somewhat eroded formation, with a break and an outward bulge along the northern end, while a ridge intrudes into the southern rim. The interior has been resurfaced by lava, although the albedo of the floor is not quite as low as the lunar mare surface to the north. Lava is molten rock expelled by a Volcano during an eruption When first expelled from a volcanic vent it is a Liquid at Temperatures The albedo of an object is the extent to which it diffusely reflects light from the sun The lunar maria (singular mare, two syllables are large dark Basaltic plains on Earth 's Moon, formed by ancient Volcanic eruptions
Satellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Elger crater.
