These were the first EMUs in Queensland, entering revenue service when the Brisbane rail network was electrified in 1979. An electric multiple unit or EMU is a Multiple unit train consisting of many carriages using Electricity as the motive power The EMUs were progressively introduced into service between 1979 and 1987. A freight train derailed and collided into empty sets EMU05 and EMU60 at Petrie in 2001, leading to one set being salvaged from three carriages as EMU60. The EMUs operate on all Citytrain suburban lines in 3 or 6 car sets.
