Darling Range is an electoral district of Western Australia. Western Australia is a state occupying the entire western third of the Australian continent. As in other districts, the Darling Range district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The Legislative Assembly, or lower house is one of the two chambers of parliament in the Australian state of Western Australia. The elected person is then known as the Member for Darling Range, and is said to hold the seat of Darling Range. As of 2001, the Member for Darling Range is John Day who holds the seat for the Liberal Party by a margin of 3. Year 2001 ( MMI) was a Common year starting on Monday according to the Gregorian calendar. Since the last election there has been a redistribution of the district's boundaries which will come into effect at the date of the next election, removing the town of Kalamunda and expanding the seat north and south along the Darling Escarpment. These new boundaries create significant changes in the make up of the district's electors, 50% of whom currently live in the district of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, which is to be abolished.

Current Serpentine-Jarrahdale MP Tony Simpson has expressed his intention to run for Darling Range at the next election and his candidacy has been endorsed by the Liberal Party. Anthony James (Tony Simpson (born 15 July 1965) is an Australian Politician.

The electoral district of Darling Range extends from the towns of Chidlow, Mount Helena and Sawyers Valley in the north, south along the Mundaring Weir and down the Darling Scarp, including the towns of Pickering Brook, Karragullen and Roleystone, the Clifton Hills parts of Kelmscott and the outer parts of Mount Nasura and Forestdale and the entire Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale.

The district is the largest in the metropolitan area, covering an area of 1,990 km2. More than 22,000 voters call Darling Range home, with the largest towns being the Hills orchard town of Roleystone and the fast growing outer-metropolitan suburb of Byford.

History

It has never been held by the Australian Labor Party - it was a Country Party seat until 1962, then a Liberal Party seat, though former Liberal MP Ian Thompson finished his last term in 1993 as an Independent. After preferences, Day trailed by 76 votes in votes cast on the day, but pulled ahead to win by 137 votes after the counting of the declaration vote.
