The college was founded as Fifth College in 1988 in the final declining years of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union and like UCSD's other colleges, reflects the time and era in which it was built. Like all six colleges, ERC has a set list of academic requirements, often known as General Education Requirements, or GE's. ERC's educational requirements stress international learning and global interaction, and include proficiency in a foreign language, non-western art, as well as its own writing course--Making of the Modern World (MMW).
MMW is a core writing course that seeks to combine various disciplines including history, religious studies, philosophy, sociology, and visual arts into a six-quarter (two year) writing course that offers a survey of the sum total of world history--not just from a eurocentric perspective, but from a more international view, including developments in China, India, Africa, and the Americas. Eleanor Roosevelt College was originally opened in 1988 in the southeastern corner of campus, the traditional "staging area" for new UCSD colleges near the Veterans Hospital and Interstate 5 surrounding the area known as Pepper Canyon.
