Edmund N. Carpenter was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Wilkes-Barre (ˈwɪlksbɛrə or /-bɛri/ is the central city of the Wyoming Valley and County seat of Luzerne County in northeastern Pennsylvania He attended the Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Wyoming Seminary is a private College preparatory school located in the Wyoming Valley of Northeastern Pennsylvania, in Kingston and Forty Kingston is a municipality in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on the Susquehanna River, opposite Wilkes Barre. He was interested in mining and the manufacture of sheet-metal products. He enlisted as a private in 1893 and attained the rank of major in the Pennsylvania National Guard. The Pennsylvania National Guard is composed of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and the Pennsylvania Air National Guard.
