Nicknamed El Matador,[2] Cavani moved to Montevideo when he was 12 years old, and came through the youth system at Danubio F.C. to make his debut for the first team in 2006. In January 2007, Cavani was selected to join the Uruguay national football team Under-20 squad to play in the 2007 South American Youth Championship in Paraguay. The Uruguay national football team is controlled by the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol. The 2007 South American Youth Championship (Sudamericana sub-20 is a football competition contested by all ten U-20 national football teams of CONMEBOL Paraguay, officially the Republic of Paraguay ( Spanish: República del Paraguay; Guaraní: Tetã Paraguái) is one of the only Cavani finished the tournament as top scorer with seven goals in nine games, helping Uruguay to finish in 3rd place, earning them a place in the World Youth Championship.

Cavani is of indigenous and Italian descent, his paternal grandparents being originally from Maranello.
