Edgar Department Stores was a chain of department stores that was founded in Massachusetts. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts ( is a state located in the New England region of the northeastern United States. Edgar filed for bankruptcy and closed its doors in 1986, soon after the chain was purchased by the Bradlees corporation. Bradlees was a chain of Discount department stores which operated primarily in the Northeastern United States. The Edgar chain also owned Almay's department store.

James Edgar an immigrant from Edinborough, Scotland opened the first Edgar's in Brockton, Massachusetts. James Edgar in December 1890 dressed up as Santa Claus to entertain the children of shoppers, thus becoming the first department store Santa. Trains brought families from Boston and Providence to Edgar's to see Santa.
