Born Edward Taylor in Benoit, Mississippi, as a boy Taylor taught himself to play the guitar. Benoit is a town in Bolivar County, Mississippi, United States. Mississippi ( is a state located in the Deep South of the United States He spent his early years playing at venues around Leland, Mississippi where he taught his friend Jimmy Reed to play guitar. Leland is a city in Washington County, Mississippi, United States. Mathis James "Jimmy" Reed ( September 6 1925 - August 29 1976) was an American Blues Singer notable Bringing with him a style deeply rooted in the Mississippi Delta tradition, in 1949 Taylor moved to Chicago. The Mississippi Delta is the distinct northwest section of the state of Mississippi that lies between the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers Technically Chicago (ʃɪˈkɑːgoʊ is the largest City by population in the state of Illinois and the American Midwest of the United States.

While Taylor never achieved the stardom of some of his compatriots in the Chicago Blues scene, he nevertheless was an integral part of that era and is especially noted as a main accompanist for Jimmy Reed as well as working with John Lee Hooker, Big Walter Horton, and others. Taylor's son Eddie Taylor Jr. is a blues guitarist in Chicago, and his stepson Larry Taylor is a blues drummer and vocalist. A drummer is a Musician who plays a Drum or drums particularly a Drum kit ("drum set" or "trap set" Marching percussion Taylor's wife Vera was the sister of bluesmen Eddie Burns and Jimmy Burns.

Taylor died in 1985 and was interred in the Restvale Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois. The Burr Oak and Restvale cemeteries are located in Alsip Illinois, a suburb slightly southwest of the city of Chicago. Alsip is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States.
