Name
The name of Eckernförde is of Danish origin. It is a Germanized version of the Danish name Egernførde, which translates as squirrel fjord. This is also the reason Eckernförde's coat of arms contains a squirrel.
History
- In 1197 Eckernförde was mentioned for the first time.
- Eckernförde was mentioned in the year 1302 for the first time free of doubts as city, but in 1288 the inhabitants were already called oppidani (city citizen).
- During the First War of Schleswig two danish ships, the Christian VIII and the frigate SMS Gefion tried to land in Eckernförde in April 1849. The First Schleswig War (Schleswig-Holsteinischer Krieg or Three Years' War (Treårskrigen was the first round of military conflict in southern Denmark and northern They were cannonaded from the shore. The Christian VIII exploded, while the SMS Gefion surrendered and was captured.
