East Central was founded 1927 as an independent school district. The district was later annexed by Tulsa Public Schools. The current school facility opened in 1966 with additions of East Wing in 1978 and Stadium in 1997. East Central is the most culturally diverse high school in the state of Oklahoma.
East Central competes in Oklahoma 5A athletics. Sports teams compete as the East Central Fighting Cardinals. During the 2005-2006 school year, the football team and girls basketball teams won the state 5A title in their respective sports.
