The town was organized in September 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to serve the San Juan mining district. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, generally referred to as the Rio Grande, became the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1920 and is today a Fallen The D&RG chose a site south of Animas City for its depot after Animas City refused to pay a "dowry" to the D&RG. Durango is nestled in the Animas River Valley surrounded by the San Juan Mountains.
