Born in Curve Lake, Ontario, Taylor is part Ojibwa and part Caucasian. The Curve Lake First Nation is Mississauga Ojibway First Nation located in Peterborough County of Ontario. About his background Taylor says: "I plan to start my own nation. Because I am half Ojibway half Caucasian, we will be called the occasions. And of course, since I’m founding the new nation, I will be a special occasion. " [1]

He writes predominantly about First Nations culture, and has also been a frequent contributor to various magazines including This Magazine. As well as his writing, Taylor has been the artistic director of Native Earth Performing Arts, and has taught at the Centre for Indigenous Theatre. Native Earth Performing Arts is a Canadian Theatre company located in Toronto. Founded in 1974 by the late James H Buller, the Native Theatre School was started with the vision that Aboriginal people could create change in Canada

Taylor is currently the Writer-In-Residence at the University of Western Ontario. The University of Western Ontario (known as Western, as well as UWO or Western Ontario) is a public research University located in London
