In episode #902, it is discovered that there is another Doug Heffernan in Queens, though he is not related. Doug hears a series of obscene telephone messages a mysterious woman named Jessica leaves on his machine, saying that she had a great time with him. Doug tries to tell Jessica that he is not the Doug Heffernan she had slept with, and her boyfriend threatens to kill him. Near the end of the episode, Doug and Carrie drive in separate cars to the medical office, where the "other" Doug Heffernan has a practice. It is also noted that Dr. Heffernan is older, shorter and skinnier than the Doug that Jessica had mistaken him for.

As a moderate solution to Arthur's annoying behavior, Doug hired a dog walker named Holly (Nicole Sullivan) to walk him, so Doug and Carrie didn't need to deal with his excess energy after a full day's work.
Along with Arthur, Carrie's sister Sara moved in, but she was cut from the show during the first season.
In the series finale, Carrie and Doug adopted a Chinese baby named Ming-Mei. Carrie learns she is pregnant a day later. A year later, he and Carrie are busy taking care of Ming-Mei and their biological daughter when Arthur's marriage ends and he moves back in with them.
Doug is a delivery man and a truck driver for the fictional IPS (International Parcel Service). When Doug and Carrie were dating, he lied and told her that he had a job. To make good on this, he quickly found a job with IPS. At IPS he met his best friend, Deacon Palmer. Since beginning his job with IPS, he became the record holder for most consecutive days without an incident, with a plaque in his honor (It was blocked from view with a soda machine subsequently. ) Also since beginning with IPS, his cousin Danny began working there.
In addition to his regular job as an IPS truck driver, Doug has also worked as a bouncer, limousine driver, bicycle courier, ice-cream truck driver, Chinese food deliverer, and bartender. He also tried to open his own sandwich shop, along with funding from his Uncle Stu, but when Danny was frustrated that his own father would not help his failed restaurant, Stu decided to help him instead by funding his hat kiosk.
