Peoples was born in Dayton, Ohio and began singing at an early age. Dayton is a city in southwestern Ohio, United States. It is the County seat and largest city of Montgomery County. After completing high school, she was given the opportunity to tour with gospel pioneer Dorothy Norwood, a member of The Caravans. Dorothy Norwood (born November 27, 1935 in Atlanta Georgia) began singing and touring with her family at the age of eight The Caravans was a gospel group popular during the 1950s and 1960s that launched the careers of a number of artists including Delores Washington, Albertina From there, Peoples briefly joined a jazz ensemble, performing in various venues across the country. Jazz is an American Musical art form which originated in the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities in the Southern United States Peoples soon realized that singing secular music was not what she was called to do; she relocated to Atlanta and returned to her gospel roots.
