Doomadgee Aboriginal Mission, originally known as Dumaji, was located on Bayley Point on the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is completely surrounded by Burke Shire Council. The Shire of Burke is a Local Government Area in far north west Queensland, Australia. It was previously an aboriginal council which was part of Burke Shire, and underwent transition to full Shire council status in January 2007. Shortly after transitioning to full shire status in January 2007, the Queensland Government announced it would investigate an amalgamation of Local councils, wherein councils that were fiscally strong would take over other councils on their boundaires who were not performing well financially. As such the Queensland Government established a Local Government Review Committee to identify the "strong" and "weak" councils. Doomadgee was identified as one such council who is extremely weak financially and is earmarked to be amalgamated with the Burkeshire Council of which the present Doomadgee Shire Council is surrounded by.
