Farish earned a bachelor's of science degree in zoology from the University of British Columbia in 1963, a master's in entomology from North Carolina State University in 1966, a doctorate in biology from Harvard University in 1970, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri–Columbia in 1976. Farish taught at the University of Missouri from 1968-79, where he served as chair of the Physiology and Behavior Section, Division of Biological Sciences; at the University of Rhode Island from 1979 to 1983, where he served as assistant and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; and at Sonoma State University from 1983 to 1998, where he served as dean of the School of Natural Sciences from 1983 to 1990, and provost and vice-president for academic affairs from 1991 to 1998.
