It was founded in 1850 as one of the first post-Reformation Catholic dioceses. The Protestant Reformation was a reform movement in Europe that began in 1517 though its roots lie further back in time Since 1911 the diocese of Salford has formed part of the Province of Liverpool. Its current boundaries encompass Manchester and a large part of the traditional county of Lancashire between the River Mersey and the River Ribble including Preston as well as some parishes north of the Ribble.
