Diego López de Cogolludo was a Spanish Franciscan historian of Yucatán. The term Franciscan is commonly used to refer to members of Catholic Yucatán is one of the 31 states of Mexico, located on the north of the Yucatán Peninsula.
His work, the Historia de Yucatán, appeared at Madrid in 1688, and was reprinted in 1842 and 1867. It contains information personally gathered at a time when older sources, written and oral, that have now partly disappeared, were accessible. Cogolludo consulted and used the writings of Bishop Diego de Landa to a considerable extent, but many of his statements must be taken with caution. Diego de Landa Calderón ( 12 November, 1524 &ndash 1579 was Bishop of Yucatán.
He was a native of Alcalá de Henares in Spain, and took the habit of St. Alcalá de Henares, meaning Castle on the river Henares, is a Spanish city whose historical centre is one of UNESCO 's World Heritage Francis at the convent of San Diego, 31 March, 1629. He emigrated to Yucatán, where he became successively lector in theology, guardian, and finally provincial of his order.
