History

Early years

The name "Devo" comes "from their concept of 'de-evolution' - the idea that instead of evolving, mankind has actually regressed, as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality of American society. "[1] This idea was developed as a joke by Kent State University art students Gerald Casale and Bob Lewis as early as the late 1960s. Kent State University (also known as Kent, Kent State, or KSU) is one of America’s largest university systems the third largest university Gerald V Casale (born Gerald Vincent Pizzute, July 28 1948) is the Bass guitar / Synthesizer player a vocalist and one of the founding Robert Curtis Lewis (b March 4 1947, Akron Ohio) was a founding member (along with Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh) of Casale and Lewis created a number of art pieces in a vein of devolution satirically. In common parlance " devolution " or backward evolution is the notion a species may evolve into more " Primitive " forms At this time, Casale had also performed with the local band 15-60-75. They met Mark Mothersbaugh around 1970, who introduced them to the pamphlet Jocko Homo Heavenbound, which includes an illustration of a winged devil labeled "D-EVOLUTION" and would later inspire the song "Jocko Homo". Mark Allen Mothersbaugh (born May 18, 1950) is an American Musician, Composer, Singer and painter. " Jocko Homo " is the B-side to Devo 's first single " Mongoloid.

The first form of Devo was the "Sextet Devo" which performed at the 1973 Kent State performing arts festival. It included Casale, Lewis and Mothersbaugh, as well as Gerald's brother Bob Casale on guitar, and friends Rod Reisman and Fred Weber on drums and vocals, respectively. Bob Casale (born July 14 1952) or "Bob 2" is a keyboardist and rhythm/lead guitar player for the band Devo. Rod Reisman was the original Drummer for the band DEVO, joining the band at its inception in 1973 in Kent Ohio. Fred Weber (b Charles Frederick Weber III) was a Vocalist for the New Wave band Devo in its earliest incarnation This performance was filmed and a part was included on the home video The Complete Truth About De-evolution. The Complete Truth About Devolution was the third Home video release by new wave band Devo. This lineup only performed once. Devo returned to perform in the Student Governance Center (featured prominently in the film) at the 1974 Creative Arts Festival with a line-up including the Casale brothers, Bob Lewis, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Jim Mothersbaugh on drums.

Devo later formed as a quartet focusing around Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale. They recruited Mark's brothers Bob Mothersbaugh and Jim Mothersbaugh. Robert Leroy Mothersbaugh Jr (born August 11 1952 in Akron Ohio) or " Bob 1 " is the lead Guitar player and occasional Jim Mothersbaugh (born January 18, 1956 in Akron Ohio) was the second drummer for Devo, replacing Rod Reisman who only played Bob played electric guitar, and Jim provided percussion using a set of homemade electronic drums. This lineup of Devo lasted until 1976 when Jim left the band. The lineup was occasionally fluid, and Bob Lewis would sometimes play guitar during this period. In concert, Devo would often perform in the guise of theatrical characters, such as Booji Boy, and The Chinaman. In Devo 's music videos early concerts and short films the band created a pastiche and parody of the real world via the idea of "Spudland" Booji Boy is a character created in the early 1970s by American New Wave band Devo. Live concerts from this period were often confrontational, and would remain so until 1977. A recording of an early Devo performance from 1975 with the quartet lineup appears on DEVO Live: The Mongoloid Years, ending with the promoters unplugging Devo's equipment. DEVO Live The Mongoloid Years is a live album consisting of recordings from three early Devo performances

Following Jim Motherbaugh's departure, Bob Mothersbaugh found a new drummer in Alan Myers, who played a conventional, acoustic drum set with mechanical precision. Alan Myers is an American drummer He was the third and most prominent drummer of the band Devo. Casale re-recruited his brother Bob Casale, and the popular line-up of Devo was formed. It would endure for nearly ten years.

1975-1985

In the mid-1970s, Devo recorded a series of songs, much slower and more ethereal than the band's typical sound, at Briarwood Studio on High Street, a small recording studio run by Phillip Gallo and Dave Bennett from the band Armentrout. Gallo and Bennett had a Tascam Series 70 8-track recording deck. The recordings were heavily influenced by Phillip Gallo, the engineer, who was a respected musician in his own right. Even though this material was very "artistic", it wasn't the sound that Mark Mothersbaugh was looking for. While remaining friends with Gallo and Bennett, Mothersbaugh stopped recording at Briarwood.

Devo, or at least some members, including Mark Mothersbaugh, also recorded at the house of Rick Dailey (of the band Sniper), who also had an 80-8. Sniper is a French hip hop group from the Val-d'Oise department Mothersbaugh recorded a song entitled "Goo Goo Itch" with Dailey on cello, which hinted at the direction Devo's sound would soon take.

Devo's big break came in 1976 when their short film The Truth About De-Evolution won a prize at the Ann Arbor Film Festival; it was then seen by David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who championed them and enabled Devo to secure a recording contract with Warner Bros. [5] In a recent interview on gaming television show, X-Play, Mark revealed that their song, "Through Being Cool", along with two other unnamed Devo songs, would be released as downloadable content for the music video game, Rock Band. X-Play (previously GameSpot TV and Extended Play) is a TV program about Video games known for its reviews and [6] He also states that "Through Being Cool" will be re-recorded for the game, replacing the synthesizers in the song with guitar riffs, and is also adding a "Big Rock Ending" into the re-recorded version to better suit the game.

Style and influence

Devo is probably as well known for their image as for their music, donning uniforms that mocked industrial culture and pop consumerism, such as the yellow chemical-protection suits during the early Q: Are We Not Men? period, and famously worn on their now-legendary Saturday Night Live appearance, which first aired on October 14, 1978. Culture (from the Latin cultura stemming from colere, meaning "to cultivate" generally refers to patterns of human activity and the symbolic Consumerism is the equation of personal Happiness with the purchase of material possessions and consumption. Mark Mothersbaugh also donned a baby mask to create his famous alter-ego, Booji Boy (pronounced "Boogie Boy"), said by some to symbolize the infantile regression that Devo saw in American culture. A mask is an artefact normally worn on the face typically for protection concealment performance or amusement Booji Boy is a character created in the early 1970s by American New Wave band Devo. The character featured in many stage performances and video clips, as did Booji Boy's father, General Boy (played by Mothersbaugh's father Robert Mothersbaugh, Sr. ), who satirized American authority figures. In videos the entire band has appeared wearing mutant masks. In a scene from Human Highway during the performance of "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" the Bobs and Gerald Casale wear rubber quiffs. " Hey Hey My My (Into the Black " is a rock song by Neil Young. For their performance at the 1996 Sundance Festival, they wore black-and-white-striped prisoners' uniforms. The Sundance Film Festival is a Film festival that takes place annually in the state of Utah, in the United States. At one point in the show, they also appeared in gigantic diapers. They reached into their diapers and hurled a brown substance (possibly homemade brownies) into the audience. In their more recent shows, they have returned to the hazmat outfits and energy domes of their earliest days.

Devo was a pioneer of the music video, thanks in part to their frequent early collaborator, director Chuck Statler. A music video is a Short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music most commonly a Song with lyrics The video for "Whip It" became an early staple of MTV, and their many promotional films and video clips are important landmarks in the development of this genre. MTV ( Music Television) is an American Cable television network based in New York City. They also pioneered the use of long-form promotional video cassettes with releases such as The Complete Truth About De-Evolution and The Men Who Make the Music, which mixed self-produced conceptual video clips with live performance footage and mockumentary segments. Promotion involves disseminating information about a product, Product line, Brand, or company Videotape is a means of recording images and sound onto Magnetic tape as opposed to movie film. Mockumentary (also known as a pseudo-documentary) a Portmanteau of Mock and documentary, is a film and TV Genre, or a single work In many videos, Devo created a "plastic reality" with original characters, serving as parodies of real-life counterparts. In Devo 's music videos early concerts and short films the band created a pastiche and parody of the real world via the idea of "Spudland" Devo created and directed many of their own videos, and the band has cited the video for the song "Beautiful World" as their favorite example of their video work. The video for "Weird Al" Yankovic's Devo tribute song, "Dare to Be Stupid", consists of elements inspired by, and directly parodying, various Devo videos (in VH1's Behind the Music episode about Yankovic, Mothersbaugh expressed admiration and envy of Yankovic's talents). In the liner notes of their Greatest Hits album, there is a transcript of a late '70s interview in which the band describes their music as "industrial", underscoring the dehumanization (devolution) of their art. Industrial music is a loose term for a number of different styles of Experimental music, especially but not necessarily Electronic music. Dehumanization is a process by which members of a group of people assert the "inferiority" of another group through subtle or overt acts or statements Their extensive mechanization of popular music through synthesizers helped to inspire the more modern industrial pop acts of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
