Plot

Neelakantan (an alternative name of lord Shiva) is the is the heir to the well known Mangalasherry family who squanders away his father's largesse and good name, but is loved by the people who knows him well. Shiva:(pronunciation; Sanskrit: शिव Śiva, lit "Auspicious one" One of the Trimurtis Shiva is the supreme God in the Shaiva Neelakantan was the arch rival of Shekaran of the Mundakkal family right form the childhood days. During a minor ruckus, one of the aides of Neelakantan accidentally kills Shekaran' uncle (Janardanan). This incites Shekaran and he plans to avenge the death of his uncle. Meanwhile Neelakantan offends Bhanumathi (Revathi), a dance graduate, by forcing her to dance in front of him in his house. Revathy, also known as Revathi ( Malayalam:രേവതി ( Tamil: ரேவதி (born as Asha Kelunni on 8 July, Dance (from French danser, perhaps from Frankish) is an Art form that generally refers to movement of the body usually rhythmic In retaliation Bhanumathi quits dancing and curses Neelakantan that she will dance again only after his death. Later he feels regretful and helps her family in many ways and tries to persuade Bhanumathi to take up dancing again, but she doesn't budge. Meantime, Neelakantan visits his widowed mother intending to bring her back home, but she passes away after revealing a terrible secret; that he was born out of wedlock. This fact crushes him, and only Bhanumati finds out this secret when he curses drunkenly that the ancestral heritage which he is proud of, is actually not his. She is surprised by the vulnerable side of Neelakantan.

Neelakantan survives the attack, but his legs are badly injured and undergoes some ayurvedic treatment to rejevente his legs. For this he kidnaps Bhanumathi and forces Neelakantan to take blows in front of the public during a village festival organised by the Mundakkal family. Meanwhile Neelakantan's friends rescues Bhanumathi and after this Neelakantan mauls Shekaran badly and cuts off Shekaran's right hand, so that he will not again come up with revenge later.

Based on the real life story of Mullassery Raju who is disabled and bed bound just like mohanlal's character in the movie. Writer Ranjith showed the video of the movie to raju and his reply was Neelakandan enthu decent aanu meaning Neelakantan is such a decent guy(when compared to him!). Ranjith wrote the script with actress Bhanupriya in mind to do the role of Bhanumathi (hence the name) but she had some problems and they chose Revathi instead. Devasuram had a sequel in Ravanaprabhu, which was released in 2001. Ravanaprabhu is the super hit Sequel to the blockbuster Malayalam movie Devasuram, featuring SuperMegastar Mohan Lal playing father and son Because of the success of the movie number of this type of movies (called as Thampuran movies) were made but only three of them, Aaram Thamburan, Narasimham and Ravnaprabhu, ironically all starring Mohan Lal, were successful.
