Detroit Dam was completed in 1953 by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers on the North Santiam River in the Cascades. The United States Army Corps of Engineers ( USACE) is a federal agency and a major Army command made up of some 34600 Civilian and 650 Military personnel The North Santiam River is a tributary of the Santiam River, approximately 90 mi (145 km long in western Oregon in the United States. The dam created 400 foot (122 m) deep Detroit Lake, more than 9 miles (14 km) long with 32 miles (51 km) of shoreline. A dam is a barrier that divides waters. Dams generally serve the primary purpose of retaining water while other structures such as Floodgates, Levees Detroit Lake, a reservoir formed by the Detroit Dam on the North Santiam River, is a popular fishing and recreational area southeast of Salem A shore or shoreline is the fringe of land at the edge of a large body of water such as an Ocean, Sea, or Lake.

Detroit Dam is located at 44°43′15″N, 122°14′59″W in Marion County, Oregon. Marion County is a county located in the US state of Oregon. It was originally named the Champooick District, after Champoeg

The dam was authorized for the purposes of flood control, power generation, navigation, and irrigation. Other uses are fishery, water quality, and recreation.

Fishing is allowed from the dam.
