History

1990 – 1997: Beginnings

In 1990, Beyoncé Knowles met LaTavia Roberson while auditioning for a girl group. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles (born September 4 1981 commonly known as Beyoncé (biːˈɑn LaTavia Marie Roberson (born November 1, 1981 in Houston, Texas) is an American Singer-songwriter, as well as an original [3] Based in Houston, Texas, they were joined to a group that performed rapping and dancing; Kelly Rowland, who relocated to Knowles' house because of family issues, joined them. Kelendria "Kelly" Trene Rowland (born February 11 1981 is an American R&B Singer-songwriter, Dancer, and actress, Originally named Girl's Tyme, they were eventually cut down to six. Girl's Tyme was the original group name of the group that became Destiny's Child. [4][5] With Knowles and Rowland, Girl's Tyme attracted nationwide attention;[4] west-coast R&B producer Arne Frager flew to Houston to see them. He brought them to his studio, The Plant Recording Studios, in Northern California, with focus on Knowles' vocals because Frager thought she had personality and the ability to sing. Northern California is the northern portion of the US state of California. [4] With efforts to sign Girl's Tyme to a major record deal, Frager's strategy was to debut them in Star Search, the biggest talent show on national TV at the time. Star Search is a Television show that was produced from 1983 to 1995 and hosted by Ed McMahon. [4] In the end they did participate, but lost the competition, according to Knowles because the choice of song was wrong;[6] they were actually rapping instead of singing. [3]

Because of the group's defeat, Knowles' father, Mathew Knowles, voluntarily dedicated his time to manage them; in 1995 he resigned from his job as a medical-equipment salesman. Mathew Knowles (born January 9, 1951) is an American Record executive and manager from Etowah County Alabama [4] The move reduced Knowles' family's income by half, and her parents briefly separated due to the pressure. [4][7] Mathew Knowles cut down the original lineup to four with the inclusion of LeToya Luckett's in 1993;[3] he established a "boot camp" to train them. LeToya Nicole Luckett (born March 11 1981 in Houston Texas) known professionally as LeToya, is an American R&B and pop Singer-songwriter [4] Rehearsing in the salon of Knowles' mother, Tina, and their backyards, they continued performing as openings for established R&B groups of that time such as SWV, Dru Hill and Immature. In late 1990s, Luckett and Roberson attempted to split with their manager, claiming that he kept a disproportionate share of the group's profits and unfairly favored Knowles and Rowland. [3] While they never intended to leave the group, when the video for "Say My Name" surfaced in February 2000, Roberson and Luckett were surprised to find two new members—Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin—joining Knowles and Rowland. [3] Both sides were disparaging each other in the media.

Five months after becoming part of Destiny's Child, Franklin left the group for various personal reasons, including her feeling of getting negative vibes because of the recent strife;[3] her departure, however, was less controversial. Towards the end of 2000, Roberson and Luckett dropped the portion of their lawsuit aimed at Rowland and Knowles in exchange for a settlement, though they continued to pursue action against Knowles' father. As part of the agreement, both sides were prohibited from attacking each other publicly. [3]

2000 – 2002: More releases

In late 2000, Destiny's Child announced plans of releasing individual side projects, including solo albums. [12] This time until early 2001, the group was recording their third album, Survivor. Survivor is the third Studio album by the American female R&B trio Destiny's Child, released on May 1, 2001 The record shifted the structure in the production process; Knowles assumed more control in co-producing and co-writing almost the entire album. The lead single and Grammy-winning song "Survivor" was by some interpreted as a response to the strife between the band members, although Knowles claimed it was not directed at anybody. Seeing it as a breach of the agreement that barred each party from public disparagement, Roberson and Luckett once again filed a lawsuit against Destiny's Child and Sony Music, shortly following the release of This Is the Remix.
