Early life
He went to Bankfield High School (now called Bankfield School) on Liverpool Road in Widnes, and then to Halton College of Further Education (became Halton College, then Riverside College in August 2006) on Kingsway in Widnes. He worked for the Department of Education and Employment from 1975-96. The Department for Education and Skills (DfES was a United Kingdom government department between 2001 and 2007 From 1996-7 he was a political consultant.
Parliamentary career
Between 2002-4 he served as a whip.
