A deflector shield is a form of energy shield intended to protect space travellers from charged particles that might otherwise pose cancer or genetic risks. An energy shield is a form of technology commonly found in Science fiction, but also in development for real-life space travel

Initially, this was entirely a concept of speculation and fiction, as with the deflector dish used by Federation starships in the fictional Star Trek universe. In the Star Trek Fictional universe, shields refer to a 23rd and 24th century technology that protects Starships, Space stations and planets The United Federation of Planets, (also known as the "The Federation" or UFP) is a fictional interplanetary state depicted in the Star Trek

Recently, though, groups have begun research on building actual deflector fields to protect NASA astronauts travelling to the Moon or Mars. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA, ˈnæsə is an agency of the United States government, responsible for the nation's public space program

A University of Washington in Seattle group, lead by John Slough, has been experimenting with using a bubble of charged plasma to surround a spacecraft, contained by a fine mesh of superconducting wire. See Washington (disambiguation for other uses The University of Washington, founded in 1861, is a public research University John Potts Slough ( February 1 1829 &ndash December 17 1867; pronounced "Slow" was an American politician lawyer [1]

Likewise, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is attempting to design an actual test satellite, which should orbit Earth with a charged plasma field around it. The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory ( RAL) is a scientific research laboratory at Chilton near Didcot in Oxfordshire, England. [2] By the end of 2007, they hope to have tested the concept in a 4 meter-long vacuum chamber. This vacuum means "absence of matter" or "an empty area or space" for the cleaning appliance see Vacuum cleaner.
