Decimomannu's origins date to Roman times, as attested by its name, meaning "ten miles from Cagliari". However, a necropolis from Phoenician-Punic times has been found in 1879-1880. After belonging to the Byzantine Empire, in the Middle Ages it was part of the giudicato of Cagliari, many of the giudici setting here their residence. The Giudicato of Cagliari was one of the four Sardinian Giudicati of the Middle Ages. In 1323 the Aragonese defeated here in a battle the Pisans.
