Consumer Concerns

Several of Dean Food, Co. 's subsidiaries (such as White Wave Foods) and associated brands such as Horizon, Aurora and Organic Valley (Aurora and OV not being owned by Dean) have come under controversy as USDA investigations have filed 14 willfull violations of the federal laws which govern organic foods. ^[11] Thus, the organic status of the brands are currently in contention pending further federal investigation. The Organic Consumers Association has also led an economically effective boycott for these and other reasons. The Organic Consumers Association (OCA is a Consumer protection and Organic agriculture Advocacy group based in Finland Minnesota. ^[12] Also, in 2007, 16 farmers in the Southeast United States, National Dairy Holdings and Dairy Farmers of America (both dairy farmer's cooperatives in the Southeast) have filed suit against Dean Foods, Co. Dairy Farmers of America Inc (DFA is a Milk marketing Cooperative with more than 18000 members representing more than 10000 Dairy farms in 48 states under allegations that the company has been actively involved in price-fixing. Price fixing is an agreement between business competitors to sell the same product or service at the same price ^[13]
