He was named after his uncle, David Lorne Steen, a Canadian shot putter and gold medallist at the 1966 Commonwealth Games. The 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games were held in Kingston Jamaica from 4 August to 13 August 1966 His father, Don Steen, was Canadian decathlon champion in 1956.
