Kaye made his screen debut with a small role in Hal Roach's 1937 Our Gang comedy Glove Taps, with his first speaking part in Hearts are Thumps, released the same year. Kaye remained a semi-regular in Our Gang through 1940, by which time production of the series had moved from the Hal Roach studio to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Minor roles in other films included Best Foot Forward with Lucille Ball and Kansas City Kitty, playing the role of "Keller" in both. Best Foot Forward is the 1943 American film version of the hit 1941 Broadway Musical comedy.

After serving in the United States Army for a year and half, Smith attended La Sierra University, a Seventh-day Adventist college in Riverside, California. Smith became a minister in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, ministering at churches in the nearby cities of San Diego, Palm Springs, Escondido, and Oceanside. Smith was survived by one brother (Dennis), his wife (Jean), his four sons (Dan, David, Richard, and Donald), and nine grandchildren.
