Son of Daniel Buck, born in Norwich, Vermont, April 19, 1789; moved with his parents to Chelsea; was graduated from Middlebury College in 1807 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1808; commissioned a lieutenant in the Engineer Corps of the United States Army in the latter year; resigned in 1811 and studied law; appointed a second lieutenant in the Third Artillery in 1811; raised a volunteer company of rangers in 1813 and served until 1815; appointed a captain of the Thirty-first Infantry in 1813; was honorably discharged June 15, 1815; was admitted to the bar in 1814 and commenced the practice of law in Chelsea, Vt.
