The Dakota Sandstone (also Cockrum Sandstone, Dakota Formation) is a general term for an ill-defined early Cretaceous formation of the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. The Cretaceous (kriːˈteɪʃəs, usually abbreviated 'K' for its German translation "Kreide" is a geologic period and system, reaching from the end of Mountain peaks of the Rocky Mountains The Rocky Mountains, often called the Rockies, are a Mountain range in western North America. The Great Plains are the broad expanse of Prairie and Steppe which lie east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada It consists of sandy, shallow-marine deposits with intermittent mud flat sediments, and occasional stream deposits.
