History

Early years

The fall of the Marcos Regime brought about the return of ABS-CBN. Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralín Marcos ( September 11, 1917 &ndash September 28, 1989) was President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986 ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation ( (ABS-CBN " A lto B roadcasting S ystem- C hronicle B roadcasting N etwork" In July 1986, then newly-formed Presidential Commission on Good Government turned two radio stations, DZWW and DZRR, back to ABS-CBN. As it was in the past, DZMM held on the tradition of the stalwart ABS-CBN Radyo Patrol (field reporters) of the 60's and early 70's to further develop the station's capabilities in serving the public. Mr. Jun Ricafrente, one of the original members of the team, started training new recruits. The first to be hired were Claude Vitug, Emil Recometa, Lito Villarosa and Neil Ocampo.

In October 1986, the station was transferred to its current studios in the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Quezon City.

In 1987, the first ever tandem on local AM radio was introduced. Mel Tiangco and Jay Sonza were the host of Mel & Jay and immediately became a hit to the listeners and lasted for couple of years. Carmela Tiangco popularly known as ' Mel Tiangco' (born August 10, 1955) is a popular television Newscaster and television host Jay Sonza (born Jose Yumang Sonza on September 20, 1955 in Macabebe Pampanga, Philippines) is a veteran Newscaster and Mel and Jay is a now-defunct talk show aired on ABS-CBN from 1988 to 1996 It was also in the same year when DZMM build a remarkable roster of radio talents, including Korina Sanchez, the late Frankie Evangelista, and Neil Ocampo. It was also in this year when military insurgents took over the station. However, this did not stop DZMM from delivering news to the public, the booth was moved to then undisclosed location and immediately resumed broadcasting.

In 1991, Aksyon Ngayon, the first ever program on AM radio devoted solely to public service was created. First anchored by Korina Sanchez and Ted Failon, Aksyon Ngayon immediately soared to the top of the ratings list. In 1995, DZMM won the KBP Golden Dove awards for the Best AM Radio Station. It was also on the same year when DZMM produced the award-winning Radio Documentary, Ang Kasaysayan ng Radyo sa Pilipinas – the first ever radio special that won three major awards from three celebrated award-giving bodies. The documentary was conferred with the Lorenzo Ruiz award by the CMMA, Best Radio Program Promoting the Culture and the Arts by KBP, and Best Radio Program by the Golden Pearl Award.

DZMM once again was declared Best AM Radio Station by the KBP Golden Dove Awards in 1996. In November 5, Jeep ni Erap was formally launched on DZMM. DZMM ranked first among all AM radio stations in 1998. For the fourth year in a row, it won the KBP Golden Dove Award for Best AM Radio Station. In its continuing effort to help our less-fortunate Kapamilyas, DZMM staged the first ever OPLAN MM or Malusog at Malakas na Mamamayan. This event was first held at Sta. Cruz, Manila where 1500 residents were given medical and dental care. In June 11, DZMM aired its centennial special titled, Ang Media at ang Kasarinlan.

In September 14, 1998, ABS-CBN Sky Patrol, the first ever news chopper in the country, was launched. Anchored by Ricky Velasco, Sky Patrol changed the way of delivering and gathering news. More awards in 2007

In 2007, DZMM continued to be the most awarded radio station in the Philippines after reaping awards from the different award-giving bodies in the country and even abroad.

In October 25, 2007, DZMM won three awards in the 29th Catholic Mass Media Awards. It included Best News Program for Radyo Patrol Balita Alas Onse Y Medya, Best Radio Drama for Maala-ala Mo Kaya sa DZMM and Best Business Program for Radyo Negosyo.

DZMM is proud to won in the Best News for Radio in the 2007 Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Prizes held in Tehran. Radyo Patrol Balita Alas Onse Y Medya bested more than 50 entries worldwide including Hong Kong's RTHK, China's RTPRC/CNR, and Singapore's MediaCorp Radio.

Bago Yan Ah, the science-based program hosted by Angelo Palmones during Saturdays at 4pm is also a finalist in the 2007 ABU Prizes for the Best Infotainment category.

DZMM top the 16th KBP Golden Dove Awards held in Clark, Pampanga in November 16, 2007. The station won 10 awards, especially the Best AM Station for the year. Other awards include; Best Radio Variety Program for Todo-todo Walang Preno, Best Radio Program for Maala-ala Mo Kaya, Best Radio Public Service Program for Radyo Negosyo, and Best Science and Technology Program for Bago Yan ‘Ah.

Armel Fernandez won the KBP Award for Best Radio Field Reporter, Ariel Ureta for Best Radio Variety Program Host, Korina Sanchez for Best Radio Public Affairs Program Host and Angelo Palmones for Best Science and Technology Journalist.

The stations plug for Martial Law had also won the Golden Dove for Best Public Service Announcement.

Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Manila honored DZMM as the Radio Station of the Year for its balanced news and quality programming.

On December 11, 2007 , six DZMM anchors had been conferred with the Anak TV Seal as Most Admired Male and Female Personalities. They include Julius Babao, Ted Failon, Korina Sanchez, Christine Bersola, Karen Davila and Bernadette Sembrano.

The 3rd Jose G. Burgos Jr. Awards for Biotech Journalism had given Angelo Palmones, DZMM station manager a special citation during the awarding ceremonies at the Balai Kalinaw in University of the Philippines Diliman on November 29, 2007.

The Biotechnology for Life Media and Advocacy Resource Center (BMARC) recognized Palmones for his outstanding and consistent commitment in popularizing biotechnology.

DZMM had also reaped two awards in the 2007 PopDev Media Awards held at the Traders Hotel, Pasay City in December. PAKSA’s "Populasyon Sa Pilipinas Paano Ito Makokontrol," won the Best Radio Production for Broadcast Category, while TJ Correa’s (DZMM Researcher) special report, "Populasyong Mabilis ang Paglobo, Ano nga ba ang Benepisyo at Sakripisyo?" had been a runner-up.

The PopDev Awards pays accolade to tri-media practitioners who have made and produced special reports about population and development. It is undertaken by the Philippine Legislators' Committee and the United Nations Population Fund through its 6th Country Programme.

2008

DZMM started the year with a bang after bagging all the awards for AM radio category in the Second Gandingan 2008: UPLB Isko't Iska's Broadcast Choice Awards held on January 19, 2008 at the DL Umali Auditorium in UP Los Baños in Laguna.

DZMM received the Best AM Station and the special award for being the Most Development- Oriented Radio Station in the country.

Tambalang Failon at Sanchez was hailed as the Best AM Program and Korina Sanchez as the Best AM Announcer.

Gandingan 2008 is conducted by the UP Community Broadcasters’ Society in UPLB.
