Custer is generally considered to be the oldest established town and the "mother city" of the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. Custer is the headquarters for the Supervisor of the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota and Wyoming, is convenient to major tourist attractions like Jewel Cave National Monument, Wind Cave National Park, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and its own Crazy Horse Memorial. Black Hills National Forest is located in southwestern South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. The State of Wyoming ( is a sparsely populated state in the western region of the United States. The South Dakota State Treatment and Rehabilitation Academy is also located south of town and also in Custer State Park. This is a facility run by the DOC for juvenile offenders.

Custer claims to have the widest Main Street in the United States. It is verified that the street was made wide enough for a team of oxen pulling a wagon to turn completely around.

Custer is also home to the Bedrock City campground which draws visitors to the Black Hills to its recreations of the fictional town of Bedrock from the animated television series The Flintstones. Bedrock City is a campground and 30 acre theme park in Custer South Dakota in the Black Hills which features buildings and characters inspired by The Flinstones television The Flintstones is an animated American television sitcom that ran from 1960 to 1966 on ABC. Custer State Park just outside of town remains one of the biggest draws to this area during the tourist season. Once the fall season comes around the visitors to this town are mostly looking to hunt deer or turkey in the surrounding forest.

Education

Custer schools are located in Custer School District 16-1. Other schools in this district include elementary schools in Fairburn,Hermosa,and Spring Creek which both serve students in kindergarten to eight grade. The Custer school colors are purple and gold and the mascot is the Wildcat.
